While an all-white kitchen will never go out of style, non-neutral colors have started to rise in popularity when it comes to kitchen cabinets. And according to the experts, the hues continue to get bolder, with two unexpected colors predicted to take over the kitchen cabinet color world: red and yellow.
It’s true: Cabinet company MasterBrand Cabinets is predicting that red and yellow will be the next two must-paint colors for kitchen cabinets. While more people are spending time sprucing up their interiors, the brand says that they’re getting fearless about color selection and choosing what most reflect their personalities.
While these two colors might seem nontraditional, Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at MasterBrand Cabinets, explained that 15 to 20 years ago, red and yellow were part of the original four-color palette that consumers could choose from. “Every cabinetry had a choice of yellow, blue, red, and green,” Pierce told Apartment Therapy. But she’s noticed that people are now leaning into “choice, uniqueness, and personality.”
In the beginning of the pandemic, Pierce saw that consumers who were redoing their kitchen cabinets played it safe with dark shades of blue, an easy color to use. However, as the months went on and people started to realize that they’d be spending almost all their time at home for the foreseeable future, they started to gain color confidence and go for the hues they that personally resonated with them.
Additionally, Pierce says that people have been inspired by more articles about color as well as influencers and celebrities sharing their bold color choices for kitchen cabinets. Cue the “if they can do it, I can do it!” mentality.
So, when painting your kitchen cabinets in the near future, don’t be surprised if you find yourself gravitating toward yellows and reds. Embrace the color confidence of 2020.
